Windows Server 2008 tips commands

Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Useful Administrative commands and tools. Here will be presented couple of useful Windows Server 2008 ( as well as Windows Server 2008 R2 ) Commands and Advice  for everyday administrative task on Windows server 2008 . Most of them administrators use very frequently ( for example working with Active Directory ), and some of them from time to time ( in complex situations ). They are started from Command Prompt ( Command Prompt must be started with Option Run as Administrator ).

1  - With this command you can free up disk space on your servers by disabling hibernate. Windows 2008 will create a hiberfil.sys  equal to the amount of RAM. This is very useful with Virtual Machines that have lots of RAM but smaller C:\  drives.  To disable hibernation, and reclaim that space, run this command:

powercfg -h off

2  - Get the complete collection of Sysinternals tools online ( Another powerful tools for administrative tasks ) . You can even start them from the run command. Use the url: http://live.sysinternals.com or type the UNC path in the windows explorer : \\live.sysinternals.com\tools.

When we are Speaking of the Sysinternals tools, almost any command line in this collection of tools can be run remotely on another machine (as long as you have administrative rights on that computer machine ) using the psexec command included in the Sysinternals tools.

- You can kill RDP ( Remote Desktop Protocol ) sessions at the command line when you find that all the RDP sessions to a server are tied up.

regsvr32 query.dll [hit enter]  – This command you only have to do this the first time.

query session /server:NameofServer  [hit enter]

reset session # /server:NameofServer  [hit enter]
