Virtualization of computer systems – Next Generation of Information Technology

In information technology, where only the hardware of the computer “exist” in the real world, and the overall software is an abstract concept, the more difficult it is to explain the term “virtual”. In practice, a virtual machine or virtual computer is a computer that doesn’t reside on physical hardware, with all the drivers and system files needed for,but rather as some kind of file, that communicate with physical hardware trough thin layer of software – called hypervisor.

Virtualization becomes practice for large companies, and slowly nocking on  the door of the small and medium enterprises. It achieves significant savings in hardware resources and the long term and save electricity. It allows easier administration of IT infrastructure, and shorter time to raise overall system if there is a disaster.

In the near future, more and more servers and server groups will be virtualized. That means you need to be better acquainted with the technology. Even home computers sometimes a need for virtualization , especially when users want to test something, and do not want to do something wrong to the physical machine.  Rather using of some virtual machine is a better practice, because if something going  wrong, user can always revert virtual machine in previous stage, not interrupting operating system on physical machine.
This is not new technology, but it is a technology of the future and will need to be ready for it.

What is really Virtualization ?

Virtualization software is tested technology that allows a physical computer to serve as host for multiple virtual computers. Today’s powerful x86 processors were designed to work only with one operating system at the same time that you need to service the requirements of all possible applications. Virtualization is changing the concept. It is possible to divide the resources of the multiple virtual machines. Each of these virtual machines work independently for themselves, has reserved its own memory space as well as a disk space, and may or may not need to communicate with other virtual machines installed on the same host computer.

Virtualization is not the only way to work with multiple operating systems on one host computer, but it is the best and most cost-effective way. The other way is to install multiple operating systems on independent partitions or drives and boot to the desired operating system each time turning on the computer. It should be noted that with this method, only one operating system is active at a time. The method of virtualization, all installed virtual operating systems – called Virtual Machines (VM ) can be active at the same time, of course if the physical computer hardware it can support.

Virtualization software behaves like any other application. Once it is started, you can start a new installation of the operating system of choice. Here it is necessary to note that the underlying operating system is called the host, while every other operating system called virtual OS.
